A fruit tree is a tree which bears fruit that is consumed or used by humans and some animals. In horticultural usage, the term 'fruit tree' is limited to those that provide fruit for human food.

The scientific study and the cultivation of fruits is called pomology, which divides fruits into groups based on plant morphology and anatomy.

From the perspective of plant protection, fruit trees are susceptible to mainly insects and diseases. Some species of fruit borer and leaf miner insects cause great losses to fruit production. Disease such canker, rust, mildew etc. also cause damage to fruit or influence its economical value. Pesticide, particularly insecticide and fungicide should be properly applied to reduce losses caused by pests.
